What is Mot type 1 crushed stone? Why is Mot type 1 crushed stone used in landscaping, driveway and patio construction?
Crushed MOT type 1 stone when compacted gives a solid foundation for you to lay your paving upon.
Crushed stone sold loose as hardcore aggregate is classed as MOT type 1. Which means that it is approved for use by the Ministry of Transport for the construction of public highway roads and pavements.
So if MOT type 1 stone aggregate is good enough for public road construction, you can be sure the crushed stone is good enough for landscaping or constructing a patio, patio or driveway around your home.
This type of base stone is the most widely used crushed stone in the construction and civil engineering industry across the UK.
What does Mot type 1 crushed stone contain?
The MOT type 1 crushed stone will contain varying sizes of stone aggregates. They range from 20-40mm sized stones down to small 6mm-dust sized particles and any size in between. This allows for the stone to be compacted with a heavy-duty vibrating roller or plate compactor to form a very hard, dense and tightly packed surface of stone.
Once it is sufficiently compacted the base-stone should not sink or move and will support any type of surface that is laid on top of the crushed, compacted stone base. This could include tarmac or asphalt, block paving, paving slabs or concrete including garage bases and imprinted systems. That is as long as the correct depth of crushed stone is used according to the weight of the load the paving is expected to carry once laid. The use of a ground stabilization sheet is also highly recommended to give added strength to the stone base and stop weeds.
How much mot type 1 stone will you need?
1 tonne or 1000kg of MOT type 1 stone aggregate will cover approximately 10 square meters to a depth of 2 inch (50mm) after the stone has been compacted with a vibrating roller or compactor plate.
Nearly all builders yards and large DIY centre’s will sell crushed stone in bulk bags for constructing driveways and patios. But in almost all instances, builders yards and DIY centres such as Jewson, Travis Perkins, Wickes and B and Q sell jumbo bags that only contain 850kg of crushed stone (I’m still not sure why). So in a bulk bag containing only 850kg you will get 8.5 square meters per bulk bag of stone when compacted at a depth of 2 inch or 50mm.
Alternatives to stone aggregates available to buy that are similar to MOT type 1
There are many different kinds of stone used to make MOT type 1. Limestone and granite are the most popular types of naturally occurring stone used in making the sub-base. You can now buy crushed loose aggregates for making a sub-base that are similar to MOT type 1 stone. They use crushed recycled concrete, stone, bricks and other hard materials to make the hardcore base for use in sub-base construction projects. Once these materials have been crushed up and graded, they can now be classified as being mot type 1 aggregates.
Other kinds of crushed stone that are ideal for the construction of stone driveways and patios around the home include sandstone, Flint, shingles, ballast and gravels.
We have a full range of clean sized aggregates for sale including ballast stone. These include single sized stone for permeable driveways and patios that is designed to allow the water to pass through the stone for drainage.
