And it’s no exception to lifting and carrying pavers, bricks and slabs. Once the slabs or pavers are delivered or collected they need to be carried to the laying end of the project. When you’re young, just grabbing them and carrying them is usually not a problem. But if you are prone to bad backs or aren’t too strong you may want to consider other ways of lifting and carrying paving.

Take a look at some of the ways of lifting and carrying paving.

Lifting by hand is the most popular method of carrying paving

I’m sure you’ve heard it before but here goes. Always bend the knees and not the back when carrying by hand. I’m sure you know this but it is important. When lifting and carrying by hand more than two bricks at a time, stack across the joints to stabilize the load. Wearing gloves can also help stop cuts and grazes.

Don’t lift more than you feel you can carry because if you drop them you may damage the paving you are carrying. You may also damage the surface they land upon or worst still, you drop them on your toes! Ouch!

Paving Slab and Block Lifter with Handles

If you are lifting and carrying paving on a regular day-day basis you may want to consider buying a block paving carrying cart.

Most good professional paving installers will have a block paving cart. Not only do they minimize the risk of getting a bad back and hands, they also speed up the laying of pavers. Especially if there is quite a distance between the point of delivery and the laying area. With each load being able to carry a a quarter of a pack of paving. This could be up to 200 pavers at a time.

There are a few variations and other designs of paving cart but the one shown in the picture is manufactured by Probst. These carts are self balancing even when loaded so they balance with ease should the operator have to stop whilst pushing or pulling the cart. They also have a locking mechanism that firmly grips the pavers. This stops paving being lost sideways when transporting the pavers.

Block paving carts are quite expensive to purchase, but you should see a return on your investment within a few months if not weeks. A must have paving tool for lifting and carrying paving blocks and bricks.

Use a Wheelbarrow To Easily Transport Paving

What would we do without the faithful, multi-use wheel barrow. You can easily load between 20-50 block pavers into a wheel barrow for easy lifting and carrying of block pavers. They are great for moving small amounts of pavers if you have to lift & relay your paving.

Downside when using a wheelbarrow is the pavers and slabs are more prone to damage when being loaded into and out of the wheelbarrow. Plus it takes a little more time to load and unload the barrow at the point of pickup and drop-off.

You can view and check prices on a massive range of wheelbarrows here

How do you carry your paving?

Do you know any other methods of lifting and carrying paving blocks and slabs?
